What Was The Holocaust?

The Holocaust was the systematic murder of Europe's Jews by the Nazis and their collaborators during the Second World War. For the first time in history, industrial methods were used for the mass extermination of a whole people. Between 1933 and 1945, Jews were targeted for discrimination, segregation and extermination.

This is what the Germans did to us, and these are things that should never be forgotten. On the other hand, we had our revenge: the survivors were able to raise magnificent families - among them myself.

Genocide Timeline

This is a timeline noting the major conceptual and legal advances in the development of "genocide." It does not attempt to detail all cases which might be considered as genocides, but rather how the term becomes a part of the political, legal, and ethical vocabulary of responding to widespread threats of violence against groups.

Introducing Human Rights

The Concept of Human Rights is not a new one. World religions have constructed ideas around morality for at least 3000 years and in the late medieval period humanistic beliefs developed further. However, it was during the period of the 18th century Enlightenment that ideas of ‘Human’ or ‘Natural Rights’ developed and an explicit set of universal laws to protect the rights of individual people developed. The ideas of the Eighteenth-Century Philosophes found expression in the American and French Revolutions, firstly in the Declaration of Independence document (1776) and later in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen (1789). In these two documents we can see what later would be expressed in full as the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR)  (1948). You will consider the course and evolution of human rights as an idea and how documents and institutions like the United Nations have been effective in protecting human rights. ​

A Short History of Human Rights

Throughout much of history, people acquired rights and responsibilities through their membership in a group - a family, indigenous nation, religion, class, community, or state. Most societies have had traditions similar to the "golden rule" of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

cHILDREN

Children are the most vulnerable members of society and their experiences of human rights abuse are numerous – who speaks for them? Childrens experiences provide a chilling insight into the development and execution of the Holocaust. From the Kinderstransport that left Germany in the 1930’s bringing refugees to Western Europe and the Americas, to the killing fields of the Einsatzgruppen and the death camps of Eastern Europe; children are victims of adult atrocities. You will also have an opportunity to learn how children were resistors, survivors and heroes in a world of adult inflicted violence. The development of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) was largely a response to the human rights abuses inflicted upon them in the 20th Century and through your research into the Holocaust and Darfur you will be able to evaluate the success of the Childrens Convention (UNCRC). ​

Children's Personal Albums From The Holocaust - Overview | Yad Vashem

This exhibition features the personal stories of 8 children during the Holocaust. Each child is a world entire. Details about their lives are revealed in the albums they left behind. These albums offer a window into the world of these children: children suffering cruel and relentless persecution under living conditions that defy the imagination.

Life in Shadows: Hidden Children and the Holocaust

A Special 10th Anniversary Exhibition, explores the history of children who went underground to escape Nazi persecution. With identities disguised, and often physically concealed from the outside world, these youngsters faced constant fear, dilemmas, and danger. Theirs was a life in shadows, where a careless remark, a denunciation, or the murmurings of inquisitive neighbors could lead to discovery and death.

What made people commit atrocities during the Holocaust and Darfur? What is the importance of traditions, cultural stereotypes and prejudice and racism? How does a society become so corrupted that its government and people are capable of mass murder? What was the importance of war and conflict to the execution of the Holocaust and the crisis in Darfur and other genocides? ​

Antisemitism

The word antisemitism means prejudice against or hatred of Jews. The Holocaust, the state-sponsored persecution and murder of European Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945, is history's most extreme example of antisemitism.

ldquo;That was the heart of the problem of German Jewry: it was so much a part of German society that the Nazi blow hit it from within. It didn’t come from without, as for the Polish Jews, who were occupied.

Cases - United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Bangladesh emerged as a secular democracy in 1971 after a bloody independence war from Pakistan that was marked by mass killings by the Pakistani army and its collaborators. This history of mass killings continue to influence political dynamics today, which are becoming increasingly polarized between the two main political parties: the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Legal and civil rights

Laws and the rule of law are the foundation of a civilized society. In a democracy laws protect the individual from infringements of their human and civil rights and ensure individual freedoms and social justice. In the hands of authoritarian regimes laws are used arbitrarily to enforce the aims of the government and to suppress groups in society. What does it say about the nature of law and law makers that the Nazi program against the Jews and other groups was legally sanctioned? How are laws used in open societies to protect rights and advance social justice? ​

The Nuremberg Race Laws

The Nuremberg Race Laws At the annual party rally held in Nuremberg in 1935, the Nazis announced new laws which institutionalized many of the racial theories prevalent in Nazi ideology. The laws excluded German Jews from Reich citizenship and prohibited them from marrying or having sexual relations with persons of "German or related blood."
